Good-Bye, Chunky Rice by Craig Thompson

3.0

It's sweet, sad, lovely. Thompson showed tons of potential with this first outing -- including some really creative use of panel divisions and flashbacks -- even if it's not quite at the top of his game (which, for my money, is "Blankets"). The story is top-notch, as is the artwork. But the lettering is a bit too ornate and made this reader stumble, particularly when paired with several of the characters' tendencies to invent, bastardize, or misuse words. Still, it's an aching story, beautifully drawn, and well worth the investment.
