Necessary Risk by Tara Wyatt

4.0

Former child star Sierra Blake is garnering a lot of attention for her advocacy of pro-choice facility Choices. When the attention starts getting negative and threatening, she turns to private security firm Virtus, specifically owner Sean Owens, for help.

Sean has never once broken his cardinal rule and gotten involved with a client, but Sierra makes him want to break all his rules and then some. He has to keep a level head. Everyday, the threat against Sierra gets worse, and they'll have to figure out who is behind this trouble if they want a chance to explore the chemistry between them.

I liked both Sean and Sierra. I thought Sierra was a very strong character in that she didn't back down when her life was being threatened. She didn't cower and try to hide away (essentially letting those who oppose her opinions win), but she also didn't go out of her way to flaunt her stance (therefore putting herself more in harms way than necessary). She just tried to go on with her life as much as possible. Despite what I feel were some questionable decisions made toward the end of the book, I really liked Sierra.

The danger to Sierra's life was nothing to scoff at either. I was surprised at the level to which it was taken, but for me, this just amp'd up the suspense factor of the story. As a reader you get privy to information earlier than the characters, and personally I would have liked to have figured things out with the characters as the story went along. I felt that, while readers learn things first, by the time the characters caught up with us, things felt too rushed. This is mainly towards the climax at the end of the book. The pacing was really good throughout the majority of the story, I just wish it would have followed through to the end, but it by no means ruins the story in any way.

I really loved the secondary characters. Of course this is going to be a series where each book will feature a different couple and it was nice getting the know the other potential main characters. I already have some favorites.

Overall, I'd say that Necessary Risk makes for a pretty good debut novel and for a very promising new series. I'm really happy that I was given an opportunity to review this book. I think this series and it's author Tara Wyatt is definitely one to keep an eye on.
