Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna by Alda P. Dobbs

4.0

This historical fiction novel is inspired by Dobbs' great-grandmother's experience during the Mexican Revolution in 1913. The story is compelling, with well-paced chapters. Although this is sometimes graphic, it's a true depiction of the time and of one families fight for survival. Petra is a wonderfully fierce protagonist who will have you rooting for her. I loved learning about the Soldaderas and ended up researching them more. This is a great novel that will appeal to many and offers a new perspective in historical fiction, on immigration, and the Mexican-American border. The author's note at the end is a must read as is the time line of historical events.
