Overview

Science fiction and especially fantasy are some of my favourite genres of books, but I have noticed that most of the SFF books I read were originally written in English. But I very much believe that amazing SFF books are written all over the world, and I have therefore created this challenge. For me personally, I’d like to both read more translated SFF and SFF written in my native language German. If you’d also like to read more SFF books that were not originally written in English, please feel welcomed to join this challenge!

With this challenge I want to diversify the SFF I read. Thus 'SFF' not only refers to Science Fiction and Fantasy in this challenge, but to all genres that in some way or other fall out of the norm of realistic story telling, these being: fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, speculative fiction, dystopian and (non-realistic) horror

I know that the line between 'dialect' and 'language of its own' can sometimes be a little blurry. So I’d like to clarify that
  • Varieties of English that may slightly differ in pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and even grammar from the standard varieties of English - Standard British English and General American English - do not count as languages of their own for this challenge (e.g. Australian English, Irish English, Singaporian English, etc.).
  • English-based creole languages (e.g. Bahamian Creole, Jamaican Patois, Nigerian Pidgin, etc.) on the other hand do count as languages that are not English.
  • Older forms of English that are not spoken anymore where you need a translation to understand it even if you speak English fluently (Old English and Middle English) also technically count for this challenge. (Although I’m afraid that only extremely few if any of these texts are SFF…)

I am aware that this challenge includes a lot of prompts, but don’t worry, there’s neither a limit to time nor to how many prompts a book can count for.
