I was a teacher for 27 years and a chess coach for students in socio-economically challenged area of Modesto California. I watched as students used chess to become first generation college graduates. After retiring I taught chess in Boquete Panama and one of my students, whose family was from the USA , was an 8 year old boy who wore dresses sometimes to the chess program. We just accepted him and the world moved along just fine.
