Ginger Pye is a book I have long heard of and known but never read. Ginger is a dog and I'm not big on animal stories, but this one is really well-done and worthy of its Newbery Medal. In books for children you always have elements of the non-realistic and fantastic, but you often also have those jewels of reality that I think--I hope--teach children about the world in a way that keeps them excited about life without glossing over the fact that life is difficult at times. Eleanor Estes achieves this.

Just as sweet as I remembered. This one is timeless--I read it first when I was six/seven years old and revisited it several times until I was about twelve. Rereading as an adult was even more rewarding. There are so many quirks to Estes' writing that stood out to me as an adult that I missed when I was young.

A treasure. There's a reason it won a Newbery!

Definitely not the worst Newberry, though it is weirdly long. I don't mind the slice-of-life style, although I can see why people married to the three act structure are frustrated.

Obviously dated since it was published in the 1950s but has good themes of family, siblingship, and being a caring person. A good but of mini adventures.
