Not a bad short story about a gay kid who's being bullied by the other members of his swim team. Turns out he has a superpower that get his revenge, but at a high cost. It's free on Google Play for any who are interested.

Just an average joe

*listening to a bunch of free short horror audiobooks from the “Come Join Us By The Fire” anthology while on the road. Pleasantly surprised by the production of these with excellent narrators and background noises

I relistened to this today while listening to the whole anthology it's in, and it really stands out, and definitely not just because it's the only one (afaik) with a gay main character. It really captures a lot of what I remember about being a teenager, even though I had a different set of experiences from the MC. Just a very good piece.

Original review: It feels strange to give a star rating to short fiction, but this is very good. It's free to listen to on Google Play. It's definitely horror
Spoilerand extremely bleak.
Like the title says, it's written in the style of a list of explanations, and I liked the unusual format.

I really adored the unique storytelling style used in 57 Reasons for the Slate Quarry Suicides. It took the story to a different level, making it something I enjoyed so much more than I might have otherwise. The horror elements were steadily built up, and made strong use of the evils that normal human teenagers can bring to bear, with a twist. Of course.

Averaging between the two of us, this is the best of the Come Join Us By the Fire short audio stories that Areg and I have listened to so far.

A story told in list form, with each reason for the title's deaths given its own number. The numbers vary in length from short sentences to the equivalent of a page or two, so don't expect this list to be dry and boring.

A teenager discovers that he has psychic powers and decides to enact revenge on the bullies who torment him because he's gay and his friend because she's Native American. (It's been a long time since I heard this one, so there might be more to her identity, too.)
SpoilerHe uses his power to take them to to the titular quarry and compel them to do as he pleases, struggling internally with his friend's changing opinions of how he's using his power and what he's doing to the bullies, and with the possible effects of compelling her.

Dark, emotionally complex, actually in possession of a plot...yeah, we liked this one.
