It was absolutly perfect. It offers the time to breath and reflect on what happened during The Song Rising, while also going back to The Bone Season and filling some lacks. This novella is angsty and soft in all the right places. Paige is dealing with the trauma of her torture and she has to relearn a lot of things, Warden standing at her side through it all. Dealing with PTSD and recovery is often overlook in books, but it's essential to the growth of the character and their humanity.

I didn’t realise how much I’d forgotten the events of The Song Rising until I read this novella and it helped bridge the gap. I like how this dealt with PTSD; it showed that Paige is still human despite everything she’s achieved. I think I’d really glorified her in my mind and this brought me back to reality. I do wish there were less flashbacks to the past and more moments in the present.
Warden though, his calm, his patience and his willingness to understand. What a man. He’s such a constant and reassuring presence.
I don’t think I’m ready for The Mask Falling.

The Dawn Chorus made me suffer A LOT and broke my heart into a thousand million pieces, but it was also able to put it back together: seeing with how much care Warden treats Paige, so delicate and respectful of her needs and fears, made me soft in a way I can’t properly explain… he is clearly the best bookish man ever created.
Additionally to all this domestic content (the cooking lesson gave me ten years of life), It was really nice to see some flashbacks of their first months together in the colony and to have, in consequence, a little insight into those meaningful moments that shaped their bond back then.

I adore how Samantha doesn’t downplay AT ALL Paige’s trauma (One embrace was never going to put me back together. Only I could do that, and I sensed that it would be a lifelong task.), and instead plant in this short story the seeds needed for a slow and coherent healing process.
My fierce queen is still standing, and for now that’s all that matters ❤

A beautiful novella to accompany the books. No plot development but I really liked it. It helps us understand the relationship between Arcturus and Paige throughout their time together as they both heal after the events taking place in London.

Love this series and enjoyed this read, but I’m petty and wanted more even though I went in knowing this was a short story.
