Kitsch but fun. It is more interesting, multi-layered and deep than it initially seems. I of course was positively predisposed by playing the PC game in my teens. Don't really remember much but the books arouse the same kinds of feeling.

Not really my thing - I am not a huge fan of the 80's and 90's style writings, character naming, and plot cycle - this is okay for those who enjoy the classic style of storing telling, as the story itself was not bad, but the chain of events were thrown together to make sure that character A met character B by this chapter when they were a half world apart 2 chapters prior - MAGIC - always a good way to cross the map quickly, right - yeah, so not so much for me - also, when someone is good at what they do to the point that they are the best and hired to do something - they shouldn't fail at doing it REPEATEDLY - it makes the reader wonder, if he is a great assassin, what did he kill before this book started - baby bunnies?

A slow start although I appreciate the work and diligence that went into the world building. Alas I didn't like any of the main characters: a cliched assassin, a bratty child who just wants to be loved, his bumbling servant, some useless women and a mysterious, overly powerful man. The only one I really liked was Limbeck the dwarf but he was far too easily manipulated. His gf Jarre has such wonderful potential but she fizzled to nothing. I think I'm curious to find out more but I am not in a hurry to seek out volume 2 just yet.

I've read this book too many times to count and I always come back to this series. I love the whole thing. The works building is on the level of nothing I've seen before, not even LOTR. The magical system is just as detailed but you don't get the feeling you're drowning in facts. There a very emotional, human aspect to all of the series.

This has long been one of my favorite series. I haven't visited it in a while but it was nice to do so again!

I liked the book. I didn't feel it was anything super special. I will probably continue to read the series.

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated

Multiple magical systems, characters that grow slowly, and general lore that all start off with numerous lovely but individual strands... which then weave together more and more, tighter and tighter, until they're all so skillfully linked that it's startling to remember that the first few books were mistaken as so standalone, and you're looking at a completed tapestry which is a beautiful and heart touching fantasy epic.

Zifnab, Fizban,  Zanfib, my buddy, my pal, our eternal savior and pain in the ass... you are the ultimate goat. May you always find your hat.

This is very high quality fantasy I enjoy. I don’t re-read many books, but this series is one of the few for me about 20 years after the first reading…now with my wife. The world is built very well, has a balance of humor and mystery, and the series builds very well. Can’t wait for the next one. Grab a friend and enjoy this great series together :)

It took a few attempts at starting this book to finish it, but once I got past the prologue, I couldn't put it down.
