It’s a really hard book for me as I know it’s not really a book meant for me. It is an important read for me to understand and combat my own fat phobia. I also have to combat books that are a about someone processing their life and still being in the middle of processing it without any kind of aha moment or this kind of memoir that is so brutally honest and vulnerable and in the gray area. I almost feel like I’m not mature enough or far enough in my journey to totally get this memoir and I felt this way when I read it a few years ago. I hope to keep reading it every few years to see if this changes for me. I’m the meantime, she’s an incredibly talented author and human on another playing field with her writing and I appreciate how she challenges me.

This book really opened my eyes to what many people face with fat phobia in society.  There are also other moments I could relate to and this book is great for seeing the world from a different point of view.

Roxane Gay spares none of the hard details in this raw, uncensored memoir about her struggles with her body. After a traumatic event during adolescence, Gay strives to put herself back together using food as a coping mechanism. What starts out as a way to regain control becomes somewhat of an addiction to eating. Throughout the course of the memoir, the author discusses how the food issues affected her, and how, despite many attempts, she can't seem to break herself out of its vicious cycle.

This is not an easy story to read. Many difficult issues are brought to light. The topic is hard, but Roxane Gay tells it in a powerful way. That being said, I don't regret a minute of reading it; in fact, I will be actively seeking out copies of her other books to read as well. I highly recommend this read.
