understood more references in this one and i need to get back into mexican film. once again love my stubborn mexican main characters i feel represented. was a little slow but picked up super quick. world building was great and i can tell it was written with a lot of love for movies in mind and how the industry in mexico worked. montserrat and tristán you will always be famous. post-credits they’re living together and once again are watching horror movies while she covers his eyes during the scary parts. literally me and who

I could not get with this. I tried!!! Really hard!!! But god I could not. One of the other reviews said the scariest part of this book is the romance and, yes, it was. Why on EARTH did they end up romantically together? I get Montserrat’s POV but Tristán was just horribly annoying and didn’t seem to care about her at all the entire time — and when he did have “softer” moments they were rude as hell! I’d be EMBARRASSED to end up with him. Also the repetition of “key” points was actually, truly, clinically insane. I was in the middle of bar trivia reading this and highlighted a 47 sentence long passage about the same information we had gotten 30 pages in. Whack

While I did enjoy Silver Nitrate, I was also pretty underwhelmed by it at the same time.

All the scenes where they discussed film and sound editing were really interesting, especially as that’s the field of work that I’m in, so learning about that and seeing how it was used as a system of magic in the book was incredibly interesting.

However, I didn’t find the story all that compelling. Monserrat and Tristan were fairly bland as characters, liked their friendship throughout the book, but their romance felt incredibly forced and unrealistic towards the end. Almost as if it was never planned to be there until the very last minute.

The actual “horror” aspect of the book didn’t hit for me either. I don’t know if it’s because I read a much scarier book just before this one, but I was pretty underwhelmed by it here.

I would recommend the book if you’re a fan of the author, her writing is still really great and I’m sure it’d be a bit hit with a lot of people, it just unfortunately wasn’t for me.
