I loved this. It wasn’t a ground breaking or necessarily eye opening story but this felt comforting and warm and safe. I’ve always loved Ina Garten and know her from Barefoot Contessa but I never actually knew her story. Learning about her childhood and her path before becoming what she is now was really beautiful to read about. I loved seeing her relationship and marriage with Jeffery and I loved the lessons and themes on marriage that were mentioned throughout the book. However my favorite part by far was learning about her career in the food world. I loved reading about her experiences as a business owner and then as a cookbook author and then as a tv star. The writing style felt very natural and was easy to get into and I loved the pictures and recipes sprinkled in throughout the book. My only complaint if you can even call it that was that I would’ve loved for her to go a little more in depth with some of the later stages of her life. The last quarter of the book felt a little more shallow than the rest and I would’ve loved to have read more about it. But regardless of that I still absolutely loved this story and I think I’m gonna go watch barefoot contessa now.

I loved the background chapters and the building of her story, but by the time it gets remotely current it’s very unrelatable and she revels a bit too much in her wealth, privilege and adjacency to fame/celebrities. It feels braggy and out of touch even though you want to be able to celebrate her accomplishments after experiencing how she built herself to this point. But she makes it incredibly difficult in the final chapters. When she wants you to feel inspired by her lockdown story…any relatability has already gone out the window. It gets to eye rolling levels when she talks about her Instagram “impact”. Barf.
