It was 5 stars until both main characters died, and now I’m supposed to care about the twin sister story which i don’t.

I saw this book on Net Galley and I saw that it was by Elizabeth Wein and I knew I had to have it. I adored Code Name Verity so I was very excited to try this one out.
It started a little bit slow for me and I almost put it down but something told me to stick with it. I was very glad I did. It took me several chapters to realize it was a King Arthur story and once I realized that I was hooked. I love King Arthur and anything to do with his legend. I loved the characters and I loved the story.
In the end the book really won me over but I question whether or not it will be popular with students. I had the same problem with Code Name. I’m talking in general of course. I can think of a couple of students that will eat this up and completely love it but in terms of general popularity I don’t see it being a huge hit. I however cannot wait to find the sequel.

cw: incest, emotional and physical childhood abuse, some sort of ptsd??, depictions of sickness & violence
more of a 3.5 star really.
i was expecting so much more from this book and I can say i thoroughly enjoyed the first half and medraut's inner conflict regarding his role within his family and his relationship with his half-sibling, lleu. i appreciated that this mordred, or medraut, far from being vindictive and evil, was someone who tried to do better than what he had been taught all his life and not live his life based on his parentage. that he, a brave warrior and skilled healer, was deeply scarred emotionally and its exploration was amazing.
but i think everything started going downhill for me once medraut agreed on betraying his family and lleu and the ensuing chapters in the wilderness. i didn't find that medraut consistent with the character in the first 3/4 of the novel and overall, the conclusion the characters arrived by the time story ended was not very convincing to me.
but overall, the language, told in second person and embellished but simple, was great and i think it had so much potential.

More people should read this series, although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend starting with The Winter Prince. But AUGH what a book

Absolutely beautiful.
The writing is masterful.
The characters are completely full and stunningly real.
The conflict is complex and draws sympathy on both sides.
Just simply gorgeous.
