Lemony Snicket may have wrote “A Series of Unfortunate Events” for children, but he writes to them as if they are adult. Of course, he still defines various words and such, but he expects them to grasp mature topics. Snicket’s monologues are deep and profound, insightful and revealing, while his writing is as natural as a bird flapping its wings. For the Baudelaire orphans, life is more inconsistent, but it is a tale of persistence against continued adversity, with the children hoping that one day the adults in their life will allow them a chance. In “The Austere Academy,” Snicket naming his authoritative characters Nero and Genghis (both tyrannical rulers) was particularly noteworthy. It is one of the best in the series also for the positive relationship between the Baudelaires and the Quagmires.
