I really enjoyed reading An Education. I decided to read it being aware that it had almost nothing to do with the movie with which it shared the same title. Only a few pages (just a chapter) and a few references throughout the book reminded you that the film was indeed inspired by Lynn Barber's memoir. An Education was quite an interesting read and especially the chapters about her career as a journalist. I was not familiar with her work, but as a media graduate I thoroughly enjoyed her memories and her perspective and thoughts on journalism. The only chapter that was a bit indifferent to me was the cronicle of her husbands' illness and eventual death. Still it was an enjoyable read with brushes of english humor.

Talented writer but the privilege oozing from these pages has not aged well in the past 15 years. There appeared no self awareness when it comes to the lifestyle/media circles which they flowed through.
I adore the film but I struggled to feel the same connection to the person on these pages.

I should know by now not to read memoirs and autobiographies.
(I'm sure some people manage to write them without seeming irritatingly full of themselves, but most don't)

As I'm pretty much Lynn Barber's age, as I used to enjoy her interviews in the Observer, and as we both lived our pre-university lives in London, I thought this would be a book to savour.
Well, I dunno really. I whisked through it: it's a quick and easy read. Her teenage years were very different from my own, but after she'd described her childhood and That Teenage Adventure, the book settled down into giving a resume of her career. We learn little of Lynn the wife, Lynn the mother, Lynn the friend or neighbour, and all the other characters in the book, however central to her life, remain hazy. This book is about Lynn the journalist and author. Which is fine, but I wasn't particularly engaged.
Still, it's a short book, and soon over.
One for the charity shop pile.

Annak idején Lyyn Barber, aki amúgy híres/hirhedt brit újságíró a Granta magazin számára megírta az “An education” című novelláját, amiből Nick Hornby meg forgatókönyvet készített és sikeres film lett. De a szerző közben úgy érezte, hogy bár egész életének egyik meghatározó élménye volt, amikor 16-17 évesen az 50-es években egy nála jóval idősebb férfi lett a barátja, ő ennél sokkal több mindenről tudna írni. Míg ez a Simon nevű illető bevezette őt a nagyvilági életbe, elérte azt is, hogy Lynn Barber többé nehezen bízzon az emberekben, alapból gyanakvó legyen és megtudja, van úgy, hogy az embert még a szülei is cserben hagyják és az addig hangoztatott értékítéleteikkel homlokegyenest ellenkező dolgokra próbálják rábeszélni. Úgyhogy igazán jó kis tanulópénz volt számára az eset. A kötetben azonban ez csak a húzótörténet, mert az Egy lányról més sok másról is szól. Arról, hogy honnan is jött Lynn, mit csinált, mikor Oxfordba került, hogy találkozott a férjével, hogyan lett belőle újságíró. Barber ugyanis a 60-as évek kezdetén ott volt, amikor elindították a Penthouse magazint, s az befutott, írt még szexuális felvilágosító könyvet nőknek (ami akkoriban újdonságnak számított), de került ki a keze alól természettudományos mű is. Igazi hangját és nevét (legalábbis a brit újságírók között) különleges hangulatú interjúival alapozta meg. Sőt kiérdemelte a “Demon Barber” nevet is, ennek ellenére, vagy talán pont ezért rengeteg brit sztár állt sorban, hogy interjút készítsen vele. Sőt meg is jelent egy interjúkötete még a 90-es évek végén. Aztán volt úgy, hogy esetleg amerikai újságnak is fog dolgozni, de nagyon úgy tűnt, hogy a brit és az amerikai újságírás stílusa (főleg, hogy Barber még igazán a régi iskola tanítványa volt, hisz a 60-as években indult a pályája) nem volt kompatibilis. De a könyv nemcsak a pályafutásáról szól Barbernek, hanem a férjéről is, akivel még Oxfordban ismerkedtek meg, s akivel jól kiegészítették egymást.
Barber amúgy azzal kezdi a könyvet, hogy nagyon pocsék a memóriája, de szerencséjére gyerekkorától kezdve naplót vezetett, szóval hiteles dokumentumokból tudta összehozni, hogy mi is történt vele. Igazából ez nem egy regényes életrajz, Barber igazi újságíróként még a saját életét is kicsit távolságtartóan kezeli. Ugyanakkor nem lehet nem észrevenni, hogy mennyire őszinte és nem igyekszik semmit titkolni. Épp ezért lehet, hogy van akinek nem lesz szimpatikus az, ahogy és amiket elmond magáról, az életéről. Engem azonban hihetetlenül érdekel mi is folyik a könyv és lapkiadásban akár itthon akár külföldön, hogy épül fel egy médiabirodalom és hogy lehet valakiből hiteles, elismert újságíró. Márpedig Barber önéletrajza erről is szól, s ehhez igencsak jól passzol a korrekt távolságtartó stílus. Ő nem kacsingat ki, nem pletykál (illetve azt is stílusosan teszi), s azt hiszem nem kicsit erőteljes személyiség lehet.

As far as memoirs go, this one was brief and limited on details. It is constructed more like short stories from Lynn Barber's life. The most famous story, An Education, was adapted into a fantastic film. This is one of the rare examples of a film being better than the book. While the book has a good deal of wit, it was otherwise a bit boring.
