I seems to be on a roll for books that I liked, but didn't love...

Don't fear the Reaper is another mixed batch for me. I love Death as a character, so that part had me hooked right away. I also quite liked the question of what is set for you, and what is personal choice. There are repercussions from those decisions, that I also thought interesting. Meeting Fate, the character, was great and intimidating!

The story is fast paced and short, so it's a quick and entertaining read.

However some other bits just didn't add up. The main character is a 13 year old boy, who is afraid of his mum's temperament on the one side. On the other side he behaves more like a 20 year old than a teenager. He has a terribly hot girlfriend, whose face he likes to suck. (As he calls it at least once). He dealt with everything as if it was the most normal thing in the world. My dad is Death? Ok. People I cared about died? Ok. I gotta save the world? Ok.

All the characters felt a bit bland, especially in their reactions to horrendous things happening. Utterly devastating news, be broken for a bit, but act mostly normal again the next day.

The big finale also just felt rushed and was over before it really began.

The plot felt a bit superficial as well. I would have loved some more depth there, though it did make for an easy and fast read!

All in all it was a fun read I don't regret, but sadly not a new favourite.

I received this book free to review from Netgalley. It was written by a middle school boy and his mom. It is good for a book by a middle school child. I think middle school kids may enjoy it.

I got this book as an ARC from NetGalley for my honest opinion.

The day Nick Ramsay’s eighth-grade teacher drops dead in his classroom, Nick sees his first reaper. When another cloaked figure appears at his grandmother’s bedside, Nick issues an order for the vile creature to leave her alone.

This simple act of defiance creates a domino effect that brings Fate and Death to Nick’s door and reveals his true lineage, throwing his world into chaos. To make matters worse, a group of rogue reapers declares war on humanity and Nick is the only one who can stop them.

This is a good short story which is very fast-paced and the action is started from the very beginning. Nick seems to act a lot older than the 13 year old he is but some teens are more mature than others I guess, especially when presented with the challenges he faced.

I didn't particularly like the cover as it is aimed at the young adult reader and I don't think it will appeal to a wider audience.
