This installment got me hooked on the start of this series. I find the topic matter heavy, but interesting, and it ties in some “real world” issues into this more fantasy world. Not a lot of exposition or growth yet, it’s just the first book in the installment and it’s doing more world building than development, but I enjoy it regardless.

I was a little hesitant of this one at the beginning but it really took me by surprise. It’s very gory, which I usually don’t go for, but I found the mystery aspect intriguing and I’ve already started the second volume.

It was very exciting and more immersive than I expected! I said “Oh no!” out loud when I got to the end, and wasn’t expecting it.

I don’t typically enjoy comics labeled as “horror.” Far too often, that’s just used as a synonym for “depressing gore-fest.” This, though, is something else. First, the story takes center stage. This isn’t a comic that happened because a good artist wanted to draw a cool monster - it’s a well-told story that unfolds at a consistent pace while dropping interesting tidbits and wrinkles at a perfect pace. The art serves the story well. Sure, there is some gore, (and yes, something is killing the children, so be prepared for that), but this isn’t a comic that exists to be gross. In fact, this book is tinged with hopefulness - whatever this is CAN be fought. I’m excited to pick up book 2.
