The Bitterwine Oath is a fast-paced young adult horror novel that would have been an easy favourite for me in high school.
Young protagonist Natalie must come to terms with family secrets and a tentative romance while the shadow of a historical massacre looms over her close-knit community of San Solano.
The world-building wasn't super intricate, with just enough hints of possibilities to be easily expanded upon in any potential follow up novels.
This was a horror that truly made my spine tingle and breath catch in the creepier moments.
Pair with: The Merciless by Danielle Vega, the Sweep series by Cate Tiernan.
