I went into this book only knowing what the very beginning and the very end would be, with some vague ideas about the directions the characters would go in. Basically I knew what you would know if you've read the first book in this series (which I HIGHLY recommend doing before reading this one). I think that's the best way to experience it, so all I'm going to say here is that this book hurt me deeply and I'm a bit disturbed now by the fact I relate so well to Jack.

This was Jack and Jill’s prequel story prior to the events in book one. We follow their heart breaking childhood and what drew them to a portal world to begin with. Once in the world they follow very different paths in the world each finding out the beauty and brutality of the Moors a world full of violence, vampires, werewolves and sea monsters. They each grow up and we follow their lives until they point where they come back to Earth before getting shipped to the school.

I immediately opened book 3 when I closed this book. Upon more reflection I may have to bump up my rating.

TW: Child Neglect, Child Abuse, Grooming, Murder

Really enjoying these books so far, they are well written, the characters are complex and I feel like the author did a good job in how the povs were split. The world is so interesting and I wanted to keep reading about, the only thing I wish was different was that it was longer as I could easily spend a good 300+ pages on this world. And the way the previous book and this one play off each other is very smart, making sense of the last one while priming you and exciting you for the next one.

This makes me want to go back and read the first book again. I did get confused about who was Jack and who was Jill, but I got it eventually. I loved the found family (Dr. Bleak❤️), the love story (sweet Amelia), and the loyalty and love in Jack. McGuire’s writing is just so good.
