Some of the text is hard to read because of the way it is incorporated into the illustrations.

The artwork is outstanding. Gorgeous, striking, unique, with some quiet details that opened a world of meaning, like the snake and apple on the roof in the arrest scene. The story is told very well, also.

It is also explicitly Christian. There is nothing Biblically inaccurate, though I find myself a bit torn about how I feel about it theologically. The focus is on Jesus' miracles, which I appreciate, but I wish it hadn't stopped without a bit more with the resurrection.

I loved the, "Have faith in my feet not your own," line.

Editing my rating and review per a conversation with my husband. If he doesn't have a problem with the theology, I'm being WAY too picky. ;) Letting the story speak for itself is an honorable goal. This was attempted and accomplished.

I just love Hendrix's illustration style and his inclusion of hand-lettered words and phrases to complement the pictures. My only complaint is that in the notes at the back of the book, Hendrix specifically mentions doing research into what people would have looked like in that area in Christ's day... and yet the illustrations were still full of white people. Sigh. A lovely book with wonderful representations of Christ's miracles. Doesn't include much of His teachings, but that was clearly not meant to be the focus of the book.

Interesting and innovative illustrations though I found them to be a bit busy and difficult to follow the text in places. I've heard this book get a bit of Caldecott buzz but I'm not sure the difficulty of reading some of the text will move it into consideration.

I hadn't been putting picture books on my "read" lists on Goodreads before because I didn't want them counting toward my yearly reading goal. But I realized it's more important that the greats get their due in reviews.

You guys, this is the most beautiful children's book about Jesus I have ever read. John Hendrix is an exceptionally talented artist (we fell in love with McToad) and his portrayal of Jesus' miracles is both enchanting and moving. I am so grateful that God moved him to write and illustrate this story. I had requested it from the library, but it's going at the top of my "to buy" list.

If you're a believer and you have children (or you're a believer who just likes good art, or you're not a believer but want to know a little bit more about Jesus) please go out and get this book right now.

Great illustrations boost a pretty uninspired telling of this story.

Beautiful book. My rating went up after I read the author's note at the end that explained his purpose and admitted limitations. I can imagine this book being given as a gift to many children.

This biography of Jesus focuses on the miracles He performed in His lifetime. These include healing the sick, feeding the poor and walking on water. People of all Christian denominations will want to share this beautifully illustrated book with the children in their lives.
