I enjoyed the magical realism, and I thought that the writing was quite well done. Probably not necessary, however, to descibe nearly every single female character in a way that made a statement about her sexual attractiveness and/or sexual activities. I will probably forgo reading further in this series and seek out Laotian authors instead.

Throwback to when mysteries had to be solved by brains and some simple legwork. Dr Siri doesn't use much in the way of modern medicine because it's not available to him in 1970s Laos. Unexpected setting and a great story.

I needed a new series and Dr. Siri doesn't disappoint. I now have a crush on a fictional septuagenarian coroner in 1970s Laus. I'm all in!

Although The Coroner's Lunch has a bit more of a supernatural bent than I normally go for, it was a very enjoyable read. It shared elements with other mystery series I enjoy. The main character sees dead people---like Walt Longmire --- and is an endearing and indefatigable detective who provides the reader with an insiders view of a specific time and place --- like Precious Ramotswe and Gabs in The Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency. I know very little about Laos, particularly from this time period, so Siri's adventures have incited some new curiosity for me. I'm looking forward to reading more

 1976 in Laos. Das Land ist frisch unabhängig und kommunistisch. Eigentlich hatte sich der Arzt Dr. Siri Praboun auf den Ruhestand gefreut, wird nun aber im Alter von 72 Jahren zum einzigen Leichenbeschauer des Landes ernannt, da er ja noch arbeitsfähig ist und im Kommunismus alle mit anpacken müssen. 

Also macht er sich an die Arbeit, ohne ausgebildetes Personal oder das entsprechende Equipment, und bekommt gleich einen pikanten Fall auf den Tisch. Die Frau eines hochrangigen Beamten ist ums Leben gekommen und Dr. Siri soll den Fall einfach nur formell abhaken, aber in ihm erwacht der Detektiv und so macht er sich auf Spurensuche und stellt die ein oder andere  unangenehme Frage, die es für ihn irgendwann ziemlich brenzlig werden lässt. Dennoch lässt er sich nicht unterkriegen und löst mit seiner hartnäckigen,  eigenwilligen, humorvollen und kreativen  Art und den richtigen Verbündeten den Fall. 

Das Buch ist skurril-witzig, Dr. Siri und die Menschen in seinem Umfeld sind alle irgendwie schrullig-sympathisch. Geschrieben wurde es von einem Briten im Stil englischer Krimis, und beschreibt dennoch sehr gut das Laos der 1970er, als das Land befreit war von der jahrzehntelangen Besetzung der Franzosen und den amerikanischen Bomben, und direkt überging in einen - von Mangel geprägten - korrupten Überwachungsstaat, in dem die Macht hat, wer im Politbüro ganz oben sitzt, und alle, die nicht mitziehen, fürchten müssen, in Umziehungslager gesteckt zu werden. 

Ich habe das Buch in Vorbereitung auf den Laos-Urlaub gelesen, kann es aber jedem empfehlen, der gerne Krimireihen mit sympathisch-skurrilen Charakteren liest. Dies ist der erste Band einer aktuell 13-teiligen  Serie.

Siri is the last Dr. in Laos and he is planning of retiring with a nice pension after helping the Communists force the ruling family of Laos, until a dead body shows up and he is made the coroner since the last medical examiner fled the country. When 3 more bodies show up Siri is feeling there is more to these deaths than meets the eye. It's a little brutally honest, has a bit of swearing, but all in all a good mystery.
