This is not a book for the faint hearted. It is dense, and strange, and at points revolting. If you are not someone who enjoys watching the worse parts of history from the comfort of the modern era,  this is not the book for you. Every character is three dimensional, sometimes to an uncomfortable extent. The people you want to root for drag others down, for no reason other than revenge. The characters you hate will have moments of tenderness, of humanity you will not want to give them. This book is thick, both in length and in language, and the amount of historical references might overwhelm someone looking for a casual read. If you are like me, however, and find history fascinating, and fairy tales, (true fairy tales, with complicated endings, not Disney stories) exciting, and you can enjoy poetic language for hundreds of pages, then this book is highly worth it.

This is a very weird book. I don't quite know what to think about it. I liked the story, the mystery and it's resolution. The afterword was lovely. The writing is quite beautiful and extremely atmospheric. The setting is unique.

However. It is very dark. It is also almost constantly gross, most of the time unnecessarily so... So be warned..
