This book is a mess. And that is putting it lightly. While the language used and writing were lyrical and beautiful, it did not take away from how awful this book was. It was just completely boring. There was no plot. The timelines with the characters didn't make sense. Everything was all over the place. I did like Ava and Midi as characters. Their pain was relatable. But the way they were written made me disconnect from them as a whole. I'm giving this book 2 stars only because the writing was very lyrical and the magical realism dashed throughout was beautiful. Other than that, there wasn't much that I liked about this book. And it takes a lot for me to dislike a book this strongly.

I think I'm just not into this genre of brutal medieval fantasy. I spent a lot of time wondering why the author chose to set it in a real kingdom and time period but not with real historical details of what happened then.
