I had high hopes for this book -- S.M. Stirling praises Harry Turtledove, and since I love Stirling's work, so I thought I was in for a treat.

Unfortunately, Things Fall Apart was a strong disappointment. Maybe it's because I accidentally began with the 3rd book in the trilogy, but there was so little plot progression or character development that I wondered why Turtledove bothered to write it. The volcano eruption is over, and apparently all that's left is a slow freezing decay in most of the populated parts of the U.S. Turns out there was an exciting mass murderer story in one of the other books, but that's over, too. The only thing that truly happens in this book is the characters coming to grips with their new-and-worse lives. They don't even do that in an interesting way!

Unfortunately, since I did start in book #3, I've read all the spoilers to books 1 and 2 now, so there is no reason for me to go back and start at the beginning. Overall, a waste of my time.
