I remembered being read this book with my third-grade teacher. Of course, my classmates and I were split down the middle between whether we liked this book or not. But after pondering, I think we don’t really talk much about survival situations like that, but I always thought after reading that book, I would be prepared to survive. (I had big dreams as a girl, so don’t take that seriously).

Honestly I had really high hopes for this book and I’m not going to lie I was sort of disappointed. I thought there was going to be more of a climax and less repetition. I did learn some things though. However I wish there was more detail because I actually found this book a bit confusing and hard to imagine. I wish the end was better but oh well. However I did experience some emotions-disbelief and disgust. But anger mainly because I know some of the things he didn’t and I just wanted to scream at him the answer. With that said he is a city boy where I grew up in little towns/countrysides. I don’t know why it made me so mad maybe it was because he’s thirteen and I’m thirteen. I honestly don’t know if I would read it again I might try it again when I am 15-16 to see if I have a better understanding and point of view. But it is a short book so you might as well give it a go.

Brian Robeson is flying to Northern Canada to visit his father when the pilot suffers a heart attack and dies. Brian survives a crash landing in a lake, but he is stranded in the middle of a forest with only the clothes on his body and a hatchet his mother gifted him before leaving. Throughout the summer, Brian learns to survive on his own: he builds a shelter, creates fire, gathers berries, and makes weapons to hunt fish and birds...all while facing dangerous situations. After two months, through a series of strange events, he is finally rescued and returned to his family.

A classic adventure novel about survival. The writing style could be a bit repetitive at times, but a very easy and engaging read.
