Started strong as an engaging pandemic tale but really lost the the thread halfway through and didn't recover. The POV shifts for the first time at about 50% of the novel and the pacing never recovers, all tension is lost. And I was disappointed in the ending, it felt so limp and unsatisfying. There was some real potential with this setting, and I enjoyed the set-up, but much of the second half felt 'edgy for edgy's sake' and the dialog got weak.

I really liked about the first third of this book - Erin's story has some interpersonal drama, compelling pandemic fiction, and an interesting point of view character. Unfortunately once the POV switches the book just fell apart for me. I get that Savannah is a bad person but she uses such cringy language and a lot of the narrative choices felt a little iffy to me (using the full first and last name of a real child victim of a sex crime, the bizarre scene where a ghost castigates her for killing the only Black woman in the book). While Mareva's story at least felt like it had a point, the King in Yellow stuff felt very silly, the thee/thou dialogue was terrible, and I felt like it just didn't match up to the expectations that Erin's chapters had set for me.

In this book, the author called cum "skeet". She called cum "skeet".

Between the 2010s YA-influenced style that was tonally dissonant when paired with the graphic content and serious tone of this book, the really clumsy way social issues were discussed, and the, uh... interesting (read: strongly indicative of a background in fandom culture, regardless of the character's own background or subculture) choices of wording, this isn't one I'm gonna recommend. I loved the gross body horror sex and I liked the worldbuilding, but overall I don't think this book was worth my time.

Basically every trigger warning.  It's a good story but...graphic...
