Started strong as an engaging pandemic tale but really lost the the thread halfway through and didn't recover. The POV shifts for the first time at about 50% of the novel and the pacing never recovers, all tension is lost. And I was disappointed in the ending, it felt so limp and unsatisfying. There was some real potential with this setting, and I enjoyed the set-up, but much of the second half felt 'edgy for edgy's sake' and the dialog got weak.

What starts as a creepy, gory pandemic adventure slowly evolves into an eldritch, lovecraftian Handmaid’s Tale. I wasn’t sure if I liked or loved this book until the last quarter of the novel, and I didn’t know it would be a must-read until the very, very end. The book spends a lot of time setting the stage for us, which is something I struggle with, but can’t fault the book for that when the payoff was so rewarding. The messages are loud and clear, which is sometimes necessary, and it helps that I agree with all of them. Amazing female leads, great queer representation, and some of the most disgusting horror I’ve ever read. I’ll be recommending this to ever queer horror fan I know.

Just WOW, this was my first dive into that kind of horror literature and I do not regret it! I mean, this was a masterpiece. Very disturbing and yet so fascinating. I didn’t know what I was getting into when I started reading and the story kept surprising me as I turned the pages! I am definitely checking this author’s other works!

that was. something.

hmm. I would by no means recommend this book to anyone I know BUT the first and last thirds of this book were fascinating. the middle… I could’ve done without it or her perspective; simultaneously deeply depraved yet extremely annoying at the same time.

i really like cosmic, unknown, uncanny horror and that’s exactly what this delivered on, if a bit more gorily than i would have liked.

poor nurse allegra, she was who i was really rooting for

Wow what an absolutely fucked up read. I loved it. I’m a huge fan of horror novels and this novel was a roller coaster. If you don’t like body horror, definitely don’t read this as it gets very graphic and icky. I was worried the “they came from outer space” reveal was going to be tacky, but I think the author did a great job of incorporating it and mixing it with the information about the virus. Also, not an expert on viruses/mutations by any means but I think her descriptions were very interesting and seemed “realistic”.

This was a disturbingly, delicious read. Incredible body horror and outrageous story. The feminine rage and sassy were top notch.
