I don't think I've ever read a book that went as deep into the engineering - both human and mechanical - of a project the size of a space elevator. Most of us Science Fiction writers like to take on these things after they're built. "ta da! Miracle occurred!" but Presby shows us how it's done, the clashing egos and budgets and personalities, the deals made and broken, and the value of a very good personal assistant.
