If you haven't played and finished every game in the Metal Gear Solid video game series, this sci-fi novel will be very hard to follow, but on the other hand the novel is also a direct translation of the events of MGS 4, offering nothing new to fans of the series, and any thrill the action scenes might have contained are drained by a writing style that alternates between flat and forced.

There are three main reasons why I love this retelling so much: Otacon is my favorite character, I’m gay and enjoy the queer undertones, and the beauty boss fights aren’t in this book. So, overall a better way to experience MGS4 then playing the actual game (for me personally).

Kojima cites this novelization in “The Creative Gene” as one of his favorite books, clearly believing it to be an artistic elevation of MGS4 played on its own, even stating that author Project Itoh understood the MGS series better than almost anyone. That being said, this book is still basically incomprehensible nonsense if you haven’t played through the entirety of the first four Metal Gear Solid games.
Itoh does offer occasional emotional insights into Otacon as the narrator, and really tidies up Naomi’s character - in particular cutting her implied sexual relationship with Vamp that completely undermined any connection with Otacon, not to mention her role as Vamp’s doctor. He also gets rid of the Beauty and the Beast unit: the four latex supermodels with PTSD who you can take sexy photos of in-game, and maybe the dumbest part of the entire series.
The kind of fourth wall break epilogue regarding Sunny is……not my favorite thing in the world? but it lines up consistently with her character trajectory in Revengeance, so like, you know, it’s whatever
Also I just remembered that he called Liquid Ocelot’s Outer Haven mount rushmore “Mount Snakemore” so this book is good actually

Es una historia llena de momentos tipo Deus ex machina y personajes cliché, creo ninguno se salva, a pesar de ello me hice fan de Solid Snake, al menos fue libre para vivir en paz por el resto de su vida.
La novela, y juego, hablan de tres temas importantes.
El centralismo, el cómo un grupo de personas echa mano en todos los recursos existentes y crea otros para encaminar el mundo a su conveniencia. ¿Puede esto funcionar? ¿Qué pasa si hay diferencias entre el grupo? ¿Qué tal si se les escapa de las manos? Y si al final, las decisiones las toma un grupo de máquinas....
Vivir, vivir tu vida al máximo RESPETANDO al resto de personas sin imponerles tu criterio, pero defendiendo tu derecho de ser como eres (siempre y cuando no dañes a otros).
Estos son aspectos que me parecen muy interesantes, sin embargo, debido a como es contada la historia con excesivo melodrama (amaba tanto su patria, no, no solo su patria, a todo el mundo, a todos sus habitantes, y por tal motivo hizo lo que hizo mientras se desgraciaba a otras gentes), declaraciones dichas en retiradas ocasiones (Es mi/su/nuestro pecado!), decisiones WTH de los personajes (no lo conoces, puede ser veneno... pero aun así te lo inyectas, o tienes un robot que es al parecer indetectable... usan a una persona que por sus dolencias es increíble pueda caminar por 50 metros son medio morirse del esfuerzo), personajes aparecen de la nada para ayudar al prota en momentos críticos u oh sorpresa, el robot que creíamos destruido funciona y deja de hacerlo en el momento conveniente), ay varios personajes qué pueden cantar lo de "no estaba muerto, estaba de parranda!" y uno se queda con cara de WTF, y esos giros de guion donde todo es manipulación, soy Solid Snake y vació mis cartuchos sobre los cadáveres de todos!!
Por último, curioso como la milicia tiene dinero para todo excepto la ropa de las mujeres, todas van con los senos al aire (viendo imágenes del juego).
En fin, fan de las novelas militares no creo esto sea lo tuyo, fan de la saga MGS o de Solid Snake esto podría interesante, si bien no sé cuánto aporte a la historia o difiera del juego original.

El uso de tecnología para controlar no solo maquinas que hagan el trabajo de los humanos, también para controlar a dichos humanos por medio de nanotecnología, tanto física como psicológicamente, a la par de estar identificados y saber dónde se encuentran. I am going to admit that I couldn't finish the entire thing, it dragged on to the point where it was almost as painful as Snake in that microwave it was interesting being told by Hal's point of view of this happening to his dear friend, but, i am going to be honest...It wasn't as fun as the video game. Put the book down and pick up the game instead.

this is of complete disinterest if you don't already care about these games, BUT: is shockingly well-written for a novelization (especially a translated one!), fixes a LOT of my issues with mgs4, and the postscript by kojima is deeply charming.
