The only thing I like about this book is that the major event happens in September 3, which is my birthday (yay!) And that's... probably it.

Sadly, I was not a fan of this at all.
That was due to a couple of reasons, I didn't particularly like Jacob, so I found it hard to force myself to read it. It bugged me that the peculiar children don't seem develop mentally as they age - wouldn't they have exhausted their primary school teachings from Miss P and moved on?
The Jacob/Emma dynamic was little creepy to me.
Although I thought it was well written, I didn't sympathise with Jacob and the action scenes with the wight & hollow were the only really gripping thing for me.

SPOILERS Jacob is totally happy to leave his life, no qualms at all. Since when is a teenager that certain? "There's nothing there for me", not even your parents?! Seems like too much teenage angst to me.

I'm interested to know what happens but not enough to read the next two.

This might be right up other people's alley, just wasn't my jam.

Very underwhelming. Very slow. Not my cup of tea. I'll try book 2 though.

This had all the ingredients I tend to fall for - misfits living on the fringe of society, creepy atmosphere, gory descriptions of violence, coming of age angst, monsters, time travel. Needless to say, this series is off to a good start. I don't quite love the characters yet but I expect them to grow in my estimation in the next books...

The premise was intriguing, but ultimately, the story lacked. The photos are creepy, but they are used as an aside and added spontaneously throughout the plot. The main character, Jacob, will enter a room and there's a box of weird photos, or he'll be reminded of something in a photo he saw once, cue photo. I'm hopeful that the story picks up in the second book, but three months after finishing the first, I haven't felt compelled to start the second.

Not what I was expecting, but excellent none the less!! The story was compelling and the characters interesting and fun. Only downside: I felt the writing style was too childish and that really takes me out of a story.
