Of the Aeschylus so far, this is my favorite. For starters we have the wonderful entrance of the passing of the beacons from which (in addition to the Malvern hills) Tolkien gets his bit about “the beacons are lit! Gondor calls for aid!”
“And Rohan will answer!”
Only in this case it’s the fall of Troy. The torch in that passage is the olympian torch and we get the idea that he who races first AND last is victor because carrying the fire is sufficient prize.
We get wonderful bits like “To think is pain when thought is blind, the smoke of a soul on fire.” And a suuuuper classic betrayal scene.
So classic in fact that it quite clearly sets up the backstory of Voldemort killing Harry’s parents.
Volume 2 will lead us into the main outline for Harry Potter.
All in all, if you’re only gonna read a bit of this guy, Id recommend the Orestia trilogy.

First read of of 2024, I read this only for my essay as its got the most cassandra in it including her death :( it follows the standard for most Greek tradgies though its quite brief its still very sad
