Rue sure had a heck of a story to tell! I’m glad she wrote it all down to share with us. She had so many love interests in her life that I’m not sure how she remembered them all but it sure made for an entertaining tale. I really wanted to see her find a longtime love and partner and as you read on, you can’t help counting to see if we’ve made it past the first 5 husbands :)
Though in her way, I think she had another soul mate in one of her earlier relationships too. Maybe he was always supposed to be one of her best friends, rather than her husband, but he was a good guy too.
We’re used to scandalous stories in current autobiographies and memoirs but it’s easier to forget about the books that have been around for awhile. This book came out in 2007. I’m glad that I found it now, despite it flying under my radar at the time.
Rue lived through it all. Bad relationships, good relationships, infidelity (I won’t say on whose part!), loses of friends and family, years spent trying to find a break in her career, motherhood, illnesses, and on and on.
She’ll talk about Golden Girls here and of course I wanted to read it. But it’s a part of a much bigger, longer life.
I enjoyed this story a lot but it made me sad at the end to think about how long she’s been gone. I’m glad she lives on forever as Blanche and I’m glad she got to tell her life story in this book.

Loved this book! Rue's writing is sharp, witty, funny, and my goodness she doesn't hold back. Her story is long and varied, grueling at times, but she always finds her way. Her resilience is inspiring, her work ethic admirable. I'll hold this one in my heart, alongside Betty White's numerous works, for a long time.

A delightful read! McClanahan is an entertainer on every page. Highly recommend. Some language parts don't age well, but that's the nature of humans.
There's a little shade thrown here and there, but this isn't a burn book. She doesn't even use real names when referring to a few ex-husbands by name. There's a few chapters specifically about Golden Girls towards the end, but the book is really about being a working, mostly theatre, actress and making really bad decision when it comes to love and relationships.

I'm a big Golden Girls fan. I only recently watched the show for the first time about 2 years ago but I've been hooked ever since and I love those girls (although Sophia is my favorite...probably because we're so similar). So I was very curious to see how Rue McClanahan was the same or different from her character on the show. Surprisingly (or not, depends on how you see Rue McClanahan), she was very similar to Blanche! This was a super fun memoir and read almost like a soap opera at times. I appreciated the fact that Rue didn't skimp on any of the details and really seemed to include everything, even the parts that didn't show her in her finest light. I always like memoirs where the person doesn't claim to be a saint or have everything figured out, it seems more genuine. So this was a wild ride through her life and some good fluff reading. The first few chapters were very scattered though and jumped from idea to idea so it didn't make the most sense and it took me a while to really get into the book. I'm glad I read on and got lots of behind the scenes details, Rue was clearly a very special lady.

A fun, sassy and spirited memoir with plenty of dish about the men in Rue's life.
