I loved this comic!
I loved the setting, 1930’s Algeria, with its clothes and houses.
I loved the cat’s relationship with the Rabbi. The constant bantering and religious discussions were gold.

There were a few funny and/or interesting moments, but overall I found the story to be fairly uninteresting. The cat was weird-looking and fairly unlikable. I also would have preferred to have bigger/fewer art panels on each page, and no hard-to-read cursive!

This graphic novel has intense artistic charm and paints a vivid picture of Jewish life in late colonial North Africa and France while simultaneously tackling enormous theological questions and covering more ground than one would think possible. The questions that Sfar addresses, from "what does it mean to love god", to "what does it mean to believe in god" to "when does one sympathize with people who persecute you" to "how would a cat receive a bar mitzvah" are scribbled out in ferociously funny and equally heavy dialogue between the human and feline characters. The corresponding movie is a work of art too, but the graphic novel sets an unmatched bar.

A winding, wending, tale of discovery and questions. Sketchy and fluid, dense and yielding. I liked it.

So clever! The author overlaps the older context and customs with modern diction and rhythm. Manages to stay engrossing whilst discussing theological quandaries. I love that the two main characters are best friends and one is as religious as possible and the other is completely agnostic.
