Joe Morton is a fantastic narrator. And he is perfect for this particular story.

The story, itself, is a little rambley. And that's because it's written in the first person with a narrator who is a little rambley. And not always wrapped real tight. As he learns that the world isn't as he believed, that people in power are more interested in power than in other people, it breaks him.

“It was as though the very constellations knew our impending sorrow. For against that great – wide – sweep of sable there came the burst of a single jewel-like star, and I saw it shimmer, and break, and streak down the cheek of that one coal-black sky like a reluctant and solitary tear…”

This book was good, but was VERY slow at times. There were parts that seemed completely unnecessary to the plot and themes of the book.
The theme of invisibility and how people put labels on you was a very interesting idea throughout this book. The narrator was always living his life by someone else’s label on himself and never lived life for himself. He always carried around his heritage, but let himself be a pawn to whites (even if he was oblivious to it).
