This is the kind of stand alone book you wish would have a sequel or even a trilogy. The planet Darkath, the Khaj and Dhirn natives, the crumbling Terran Empire all begged for more stories to be told about them. This book reminded me a lot of both Dune and C.J. Cherryh's The Faded Sun trilogy.
