I enjoyed this book. The plot was unpredictable. It's one of those books with several different characters and storylines, but you don't know how they are all connected until the end.

This book took forever for me to read.  I only read it cause I like to finish what I start. I don’t mind violence in a book but this was to explicit for my tastes.

I recognize this book was written in 1998 or earlier but there is a lot of problematic content, even for back then. White men using the N word repeatedly and not in a historical context. The word retard being used to denote a lack of intelligence. And even the word Chinaman. I knew this language was harmful in 1998 why didn’t the author?

The way the deaf protagonist is written is troubling. Deaf isn’t a handicap nor is the word appropriate. Sure it is non-normative but we require difference in our world and this character is portrayed as a victim. The sexualization of her is troubling, every man she comes across focuses on her body and wants to sleep with her? She is written like a prize to be won, not a human being.

Ugh, this is why I don’t normally read this kind of book, it’s toxic. I expected more from a female author.

One.of my friends loved this book so he gave it to me to read. I thought that the writing style was very mature and the book never bored me. The romance aspect was quite cliche and predictable however. This book has a sort of mystery component as well but it is close to impossible to guess the twist until the author throws it on you in the last 15 pages or so. A part of me enjoyed the ending but another part of me thought that it was a bit silly. Overall it was fun to read but I probably wouldnt recommend it.

First book I've read by this author and I will admit I wasn't as happy with the first half (found it dragged) but the second half was great. The second half is the reason for the 4-star rating.

Lots of great characters and everything comes together at the end, a great page-turner once you get into it. I will warn it's very violent and disturbing so not for everyone.
