How a full-time biology professor managed to write and illustrate a 300 page comic book in his spare time is beyond me, but we've certainly benefited from his professional expertise; Last of the Sandwalkers is a graphic adventure story that is also a fascinating introductions to lesser known beetles, worms, spiders, and other insects. Well-researched footnotes and scientific nomenclature make this a great educational read for any age, and Hosler strikes the perfect balance between the two worlds of science and entertainment without leaning too heavily in either field. I'm astounded that such a talented artist can be such a thorough biologist, and vice versa!

READING THIS BOOK IS LIKE COMPLETING A LOVE CIRCUIT. Hopefully I'll get a chance to write more later.

As a “professional bookworm” I’m early surprised by a novel. This book SURPRISED me and reignited my high school passion for biology. Since picking this up, I have been blabbing on about beetles and other insects to anyone who would listen. The drawings are interesting, the storyline is funny and smart, and I learned so much.

Bug Explorers! Very cute and educational. A little too convenient on some plot points for me, but such is the way of children's lit.

This was so fun! I loved how clear it was to see that Hosler knew so much about beetles and wanted to make sure the reader did too. I think it also captured the wonder and mystery of nature very well. I think my only complaint is that there's not more adventures to be bad in this beetle society.

I looove when scientists write comics because they have this unique knack of turning something really mundane or something people don't think about a lot into a fascinating subject. The author of this graphic novel, Jay Hosler, is a biologist, who creates a grand adventure story about beetles. Builds a whole world, and it's super fun to read with high stakes, but also so informative with fun facts.

Neat little adventure about 5 beetle scientists who go in search of new non-beetle life. This would be a great book for kids. It's strictly G-rated and explains a lot of sciencey stuff about bugs like how lightningbugs make light or how pheromones work. The art is pretty good too. It reminded me distinctly of Bone.

this is one of those books where it’s by no means the greatest piece of literature you’ve ever read, but it’s a fun time. this book was such a joy to read!!

I read this along with my 14 year old as part of the homeschool curriculum we've been doing for the school year. It was a cute and fun book. I learned a lot about insects.
