If I could give this an extra half star, I would.

I read this and the second book when they first came out, but that was going on ten years now (whoa) and I didn't really remember them. Because of the attention the latest film adaptation is getting, I've decided to read through the series (it might take me a while since I'm waiting for used copies and school starts in 2 weeks...) and I'm really looking forward to it, especially after finishing this one. I found that I enjoyed it more than I did the first time--I'm not sure why, but the further chronological distance from my own time at school might have something to do with it. The whimsey is terrific, and I just love hearing about all of the candy. My husband and I watched the movie last night (which I'd never seen) and I loved inwardly comparing the two (I tried not to say too much aloud, though, since those "in the book they did it this way..." people drive me noodles).

I started #2 last night and should be finished with it soon.
