Although the young girl in this story is fictional, this story is based on the very real Hurricane Maria that struck Puerto Rico in 2017. I LOVED the author's note at the end, which provides facts about the impact of the hurricane and a list of organizations that are working to promote Puerto Rican independence and food sovereignty. The more I learn about how the U.S. treats Puerto Rico, the more disgusted and angry I get. This gorgeously, heartfully illustrated story brings much-needed representation to the world of picture books.
