The words on the book cover say this is a novel, but it's a memoir. Even Nettel has stated that everything in it is true (though she also questions whether it's possible to write a 'true' autobiography). Read as a novel, it feels slow and plotless. As a memoir, it's full of sharp images, sudden insights into a childhood.
