It turns out I really like books that center queer rage. 

This book features a gay trans boy who has been turned into a monster by a Christian doomsday cult and his friend turned sort of lover, a gay autistic boy leading an army made of a LGBTQ youth club.

If you can stand the gore, it’s a wholesome story of a victim of religious trauma exploding out of the closet. If you grew up in oppressive religion and ever wanted justice, this is for you. 

There’s lots of queer representation in the chosen family, and I loved it. The chosen family brings a surprising amount of queer joy to temper the rage. 

Our main characters act in different but relatable ways as a result of their religious trauma, and they feel very much like real queer people. I also appreciated that Nick is fully presented as autistic- he stims constantly, has a noticeably flat affect, can’t handle touch, and shuts down under stress.

The moral of this story is that you can’t tell kids that they need to defend their people without them violently defending chosen family, and you cannot tell queer and autistic kids that we are deformed monsters and expect us to go quietly along with it.

Very interesting story, the world building was a bit confusing at the beginning but I got the hang of it, love the development of the 3 main characters

Benji is the epitome of that “Aren’t you tired of being nice? Don’t you just wanna go apeshit?” And I love that for him. I hope he and Nick kiss forever and ever.
