3.75. While I thoroughly enjoy the narration of this book (British accents make everything better!) I think I may have enjoyed this story more if I was still a child. The adult me wants an explanation for every event and that doesn't happen much. I'm going to try the next book in the series to truly determine if it's for me.

What a weird little book.  I want to reread it just because there was so much happening, so much overlap with the past and present that I think a lot of its nuance was lost on me.  But it was a beautiful tale, both in plot and language.  This book is filled with childhood joy and wonder as well as childhood frustration and fear.  Even better, Tolly and his great-grandmother understand each other in the deepest sense, without ever downplaying or upplaying their age difference.  And the castle.  Its descriptions were lavish, imaginative, wonderful.

This is something utterly full of wonder, and I'm glad to have read it.
