A brilliant beginning. After that, okay... A family saga returning time and again to Ruby's present from her family's history and her own (omniscient seen) future. It was alright, didn't like many characters, wasn't too bothered really. The interesting plot point was interesting but it didn't make sense to me why Ruby had never known about it. I won't spoil it.
Overall, alright, well-written but I was disappointed not to have enjoyed it more.

I liked this! Lots of complicated interpersonal drama. I often wanted the characters to strive to be kind to each other or try to be happy but still somehow enjoyed it, despite not liking most of them. Justice for Patricia. There were about 30 pages right before the end that could have been edited but still worth the read.

What a marvelous storyteller. Atkinson deftly weaves together the past, present, and future, without losing me or making the story feel contrived. Brilliant! Also, she is a master at character development, giving defined personalities and voices to a large cast so that I felt as if I knew them.

This was a "quick" read in that I had a hard time putting it down, but I took my time to savor the language and story. Lovely all-around 5-star.

Will add that I'm a little peeved at my book-recommending friends who didn't INSIST I get to know Kate Atkinson's work earlier. ;-) I look forward to adding her other books to my list.

So good, I read the whole thing in one day. I loved all the tangents and moving in time so much
