This is a highly confusing read. An awful lot of names and people. It can take some time to place different people into the story.

The story in general is just very sad. More in a, this is wholly depressing rather than evoking much sympathy for the characters. There's not much of a defined plot per say, more of a convoluted retelling of a rather unfortunate, dysfunctional family. The footnote chapters are difficult to place in time.

That said, I committed to finishing the book. Maybe I was optimistic it would pick up, it didnt. It is a rather gruelling read at times. Later on in the books there are more interesting chapters and I did get pulled into the book. The way tragedy is dealt with in such a matter of fact is annoyingly intriguing. Not that the book is really about tragedy. It's quite amazing how a book can be so sad when so little time is spent on exploring the unfortunate events.

I would have rated it a bit lower but I was satisfied with the ending. I wouldn't recommend this book but it's not totally impossible to get through. It's just boring at points which I suppose, fits quite well with the story itself.
