There's an interesting way this book is totally unashamed and unskeptical of some of the most extreme excesses of niche identitarism. I'm not sure I agree with some of the premises or the conclusions thereof, but it was interesting to see them played out. And also this book is just a lot of fun in its relentless positivity.
I did find the main character to often seem even younger than 17, especially with the seeming ignorance about workplace norms and assuming responsibility over the relationship of the bakery owners.
I felt the romance to be a bit lacking (details like noting Syd's attraction to Harley's hands without any detail about what about his hands made them attractive undermined it, as did the lack of mutuality in growth, Harley seemed much more mature and aware than Syd and shepherding rather than falling in love together) and this book has far too many tertiary characters and too few secondary characters for my taste, but I really appreciated the way it inhabited the city of Austin and the community of a queer third space.
