I picked up this poetry collection because the author is one of my creative writing professors, and, because I adore her as a professor, I was curious about her work. I'm really glad I followed that impulse. This is most certainly not a poetry collection for everyone, but it felt very reminiscent of my professor's teaching style and her general approach to poetry in class.

Anyway.

One of the reasons I enjoyed this collection of poems was because of its focus on imagery. The pictures this collection paints are both lush and disturbing, and they were fascinating because of it. I found myself rereading poems over and over again just to make sense of the images it was creating and to find the proper response of horror to them.

Another notable thing about this collection was that it had no discernible titles for individual poems. This made it so that poems felt independent and dependent on one another. I felt like this sensation was intensified when a poem without a "complete thought" was followed by one that seemed to respond or "complete" the previous one.

Overall, though, I would not recommend picking this up if you're not into contemporary poetry or “nonsensical” poetry. There is some sense to be found in these poems, but you have to want to look for it, and it won’t be as “definite” as you may want it to be. Personally, though, I enjoyed my time reading it, even though I struggled a bit to get into it.
