Early Reader 1
Published January 2017

Sofia, a spunky girl of Latina descent, has decided to put together a time capsule. She recruits everyone in her family to write things about themselves and add a little memento to the family time capsule. Abuela adds letters she has written to each of her grandchildren into the time capsule as well. Sofia can’t stand to wait a whole year to see what her Abuela wrote to her, and ends up making a mess when she tries to sneak it back out. This early reader includes a few Spanish words, like Abuela, and the author highlights them in pink all along the way and the built in glossary helps new readers understand the words, though they are quite clear from context clues. The story is broken into 3 short chapters, making it easy to keep the reading sessions short so that the new reader doesn’t get too bogged down or frustrated. The chapters and glossary also help to start to teach the new readers the structure of a book that they can expect as they increase their reading levels. There are bright, upbeat illustrations throughout that will help them gather even more context as they decipher the story from the words. The author also added in an activity and discussion questions for parents to use with their child to build their reading comprehension skills. This is a sweet story about a curious, bold young girl and her loving family that is perfect for the early reader.

Colorful and cute illustrations. Short chapters and illustrations on every page. Latina main character and family with Spanish interpersed throughout. A great story of multi-generational family and closeness making a family time capsule with aunts and cousins and grandma.
