This is a fresh twist on the typical detective story and a very enjoyable read. I really enjoyed Darby's character but what I truly loved about this is how I truly felt like I was traveling with him. I've read books that take the main characters to different places but never have I felt so involved and right in the action and I've never even wanted to go to Hong Kong. Ha! This is funny and fresh and I would recommend to friends.

Excellent story that is entertaining with character development and a good plot line that keeps you guessing. The main character is a weasel but the author makes him endearing.

Darby Stansfield is a struggling salesman for Teleco. His boss has it out for him and is on his back when it looks like Darby might actually receive high-hitter status within the company. With good reason – Darby seeks out Triad gang members in Hong Kong, using information from the chef at his favourite chinese restaurant – Mr Fu. Along with ties to the Wo Shing Wo, Mr Fu also has a dark side to him. Not so coincidentally, a serial murderer is on the loose in San Francisco.

Darby becomes successful with his plan to tap into the underground market with his wireless communication solutions, much to the dismay of his boss, and strikes up a romance with Leslie Choi – an Inspector who specialises in gangs and witnessed the murder of her father – the work of the enforcer of the Wo Shing Wo.

This was an enjoyable read, funny at times but pretty predictable for a ‘thriller’. Some of the dialogue was a little robotic and fell into the trap of ‘telling’ versus ‘showing’. I felt like some parts were skimmed over and could have gone into a little more depth and some chapters could have been cut out completely. Also, there were noticeable spelling and grammatical errors which my pedantic self couldn’t help but grumble over. I would be willing to read the next instalment as I’m curious to as to how much more trouble Darby could get himself into.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads

Despite the few spelling and grammatical errors, which seems to bother other reviewers so much, I thought [b:Chop Suey: A Darby Stansfield Thriller|11304992|Chop Suey A Darby Stansfield Thriller (Volume 1)|Ty Hutchinson|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZHMNxKKEL._SL75_.jpg|16232793] was a truly effortless read. [a:Ty Hutchinson|4823576|Ty Hutchinson|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1304364033p2/4823576.jpg] created very charming and likeable characters in Darby Stansfield and his best friend and co-conspirator, Tavish "Tav" Woo-Kaminsky. This book was an entertaining and action-packed read with some very unexpected twists.

Memorable Quotes
"Harold took his time as he sauntered into the elevator in his off-the-rack suit from Sears, the husky section, with a big stupid grin that said, “Hi, I’m a chronic masturbator.”

“The Chinese were more obsessed with freshness than a douche commercial.”

The pop-culture references were what really drew me into this book. Starting on page one with a Richard Simmons comment they continued right through to the end.

I liked the pace of the novel right up till the end. Things seemed to tie up a little too hurried for my liking but overall everything made sense and for the most part I enjoyed the characters. Albeit, some of them I liked in a love-to-hate kind of way.

3.5 stars.
