T.C. Boyle is masterful when it comes to writing, however - the stories did not get on well with me. Few kept my interest, sadly.

If you only read one T.C. Boyle short story, read King of Bees! It is haunting, magical, upsetting and sums up his writing style quite well. I'm still thinking about that story and I read 6 other short stories after it. I only gave this collection 3 stars because about half of the stories were weaker in my opinion than the other half that stood out.

T.C. Boyle is one of my favorite writers and one of the reasons is that he moves seamlessly between novels and short stories - a feat not many writers can do. There was definitely a lot of Carver influence here, but also Boyle's unique voice that can make an absurd situation (a man strapped to the bottom of a truck) seem absolutely normal.
