The black tropes and terrible AAVE attempts were off-putting. I enjoyed most of the other books in this series.

Not my favorite Tess Monaghan book. It feels fractured, with too many different points of view. I respect Lippman's efforts to get into the head of Lloyd Jupiter, a young, black teenage dropout living on the streets of Baltimore. I do think she does a good job with his character. But there's just too much going on and it's revealed in long wrap-ups, which seem plugged in to tie up loose ends. There's more telling than showing in this book, which isn't what I've come to expect from Lippman's usually well crafted, nuanced writing.

Listened to this as an audio book and really enjoyed it. My only complaint is that it gets very repetitive in the middle.

my first book of hers was not really impressed, don't really like the characters, they are just ok, the story line ok, it as not good but not horrible either, would have liked a little more plot

This one took a while to get through, but it shouldn't have. I guess it took a while for me to get really interested, but I feel now like I was interested the whole time. The reader really gets invested in Lloyd's life and such. Tess is always trying to do the right thing, Crow keeps some secrets, and no minor detail is forgotten. This book keeps you guessing, and I like how the individual characters had their own sections of the book with their own voices and thoughts. Interesting read.

This is more 3.5, but I did really enjoy it. And I had no problem jumping in in the middle of the series. The Baltimore setting made me somewhat nostalgic. I'd definitely read another book by Lippman.

A solid addition to the series. This must have been written during the height of The Wire. It is the first of the series to look at Baltimore from that lens. More predictable than most of the other books, this was still enjoyable.
